How to Meet New People in Munich: 14 Ways

13 min read
Junge Leute treffen sich am Abend an der Isar in München

Almost 100,000 people moved to Munich in 2025. Exactly 99,963, according to the City of Munich Statistical Pocketbook 2026 (Statistisches Taschenbuch). A full city. And still, many of us are looking for our people.

New job, a new degree, a new flat. Your colleagues are nice, but after work everyone goes home. Your old friends live somewhere else. And here, nobody seems to have time.

This list shows you how to meet new people in Munich: 14 groups, courses and meetups, sorted by your situation. Sports, new in town, studying, volunteering, courses and spontaneous evenings. With costs and links. Plus one simple rule that makes every one of these options work better.

In short: The most reliable way to meet people in Munich is to join a group that meets regularly: a sports class, a language café, a volunteer shift. Going once is rarely enough. According to a study from the University of Kansas, it takes about 50 hours together for strangers to become casual friends.

  • Pick a group that fits your everyday life.
  • Go four or five times before you decide.
  • Many options on this list are free.

Many of us start over in Munich

Most of us know this. New city, packed U-Bahn, and the weekend calendar is empty. That has little to do with us. It is the situation.

Munich is a city where many people live alone. 54.4% of all Munich households are single-person households, as of 31 December 2025 (City of Munich, Statistical Pocketbook 2026). In Maxvorstadt, the share is 67.7%.

On top of that, people keep moving here. Everyone who arrives starts over in some way: new routes, new places, new faces.

A number from the Bertelsmann Stiftung fits the picture too. In 2024, it surveyed 2,532 young adults. The result: 46% of us aged 16 to 30 feel moderately or very lonely.

This is not a personal problem. It is a question of opportunity. When you are new, you do not have regular places or regular plans with other people yet. Those are exactly what you can build. The rest of this list shows you how.

The one rule: keep coming back

Our rule of thumb: pick one group and go four or five times. That gets you further than ten different events.

It is based on a study by Jeffrey Hall from the University of Kansas (Hall 2018, Journal of Social and Personal Relationships). He looked at how much time together it takes for strangers to become friends. The numbers, roughly rounded:

  • about 50 hours to become casual friends
  • about 90 hours to become friends
  • more than 200 hours to become close friends

Source: Hall, Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, 2018.

A single event gives you maybe three hours. After that, you often never see those people again. At the next event, you start from zero.

With a group that meets regularly, the hours add up. By the fourth or fifth time, you are not a new face anymore. You know a few names. Conversations pick up where they left off last time.

An example: a cooking meetup every two weeks, three hours each. After five meetups, you have spent 15 hours together. That is not a friendship yet, but it is a good start. After half a year, it is almost 40 hours. Ten different events never get you that far with any one group.

Important: the hours are a guide, not a promise. You cannot plan a friendship. But coming back makes it possible. The group that stays gives you more than the biggest event.

How to use the list below:

  1. Pick one option that fits your everyday life.
  2. Put the next four or five dates in your calendar.
  3. Go, even if you do not know anyone the first time.

Sports and staying active

When you do sports, talking happens on the side. You have something to do right away, and nobody has to sit quietly at a table.

Munich Girls Talking & Walking

A group for women only. You go for walks together every two weeks, in the Englischer Garten or along the Isar. It is free to join.

Current dates are on Instagram (@munichgirlstalkingwalking).

Mobil Krankenkasse running group

A mixed running group for everyone, whether you are just starting out or already run a lot. Every Tuesday from 6 to 7:15 pm at SV Weißblau-Allianz, Osterwaldstraße 144. Several coaches run with you, so there are different pace groups.

It is free, and you do not need to be insured with Mobil Krankenkasse. No sign-up needed. Details (in German) on mobil-krankenkasse.de.

You can find more mixed sports groups at the university sports programme ZHS (about 600 classes, for students) and at the MVHS (for everyone). More on both further down. Wherever you go, the same rule applies: better the same group every time than somewhere new every time.

New in town: groups for making connections

Here you meet people who are looking for exactly the same thing as you. Nobody has to explain why they are there.

Munich Stammtisch on Meetup

The Munich Stammtisch has about 8,500 members on Meetup. There are several meetups a month, and it is free to join.

You can find all dates on Meetup. Tip: pick a format you like and keep going to that one.

Social Circle Munich

Small groups instead of a big crowd. Social Circle Munich is for people aged 22 to 35. Upcoming evenings include Saturday 24 October and Thursday 29 October.

You need a ticket. Check the price directly on Meetup or at Social Circle.

A small tip for both groups: if you had a good chat with someone, just ask if they will be at the next meetup too. That way, you already know a face in the room the second time.

For students: uni is your advantage

Universities offer things that are made for meeting people. Many cost little or nothing. Use them while you are enrolled.

ZHS university sports

About 600 classes, and the winter semester 2026/27 is already running. Costs depend on the class. Everything else is on zhs-muenchen.de.

A class with one fixed slot a week fits the rule from above perfectly. You see the same people every week.

ESN TUMi

ESN TUMi organises events and trips, mainly for international students. You pay per event. The programme is on tumi.esn.world.

LMU International Office Get-Together

The LMU International Office invites international and exchange students to get-togethers, for example on 3 November 2026. It is free to join. Details are on the LMU events page.

Volunteering: meet people and do some good

When you volunteer, you share a goal from the start. You work on something together, and there is plenty to talk about.

Münchner Tafel

The Münchner Tafel, Munich's food bank, is looking for people to take shifts at 30 distribution points across the city. Joining costs nothing.

If you always take the same shift, you often see the same people. More on muenchner-tafel.de.

Tatendrang

Not sure yet which kind of volunteering suits you? Tatendrang gives you free advice and helps you find a good fit.

For short one-off volunteering tasks, there is also "What's to do" via WhatsApp. That way you can try it out first. Everything is on tatendrang.de.

Über den Tellerrand cooking in Munich

At the Über den Tellerrand cooking meetups, you cook together and eat together. Upcoming dates include 29 October and 12 November.

Sign-up is via Ticket Tailor. According to the announcement, it is free to join, but check when you sign up.

Courses and language cafés

A course gives you a fixed date and something to talk about. That makes the start easy.

MVHS

The Münchner Volkshochschule, the city's adult education centre, has its autumn/winter 2026/27 programme online. You pay per course. Check the course language before you book. Browse on mvhs.de.

Tip: choose a course with several sessions rather than a single evening. That way, you come back automatically.

Language cafés at the city library

The Münchner Stadtbibliothek, Munich's city library, runs free language cafés in ten languages, for all levels and without registration. They take place in many district libraries, for example in Pasing, Moosach, Bogenhausen, Westend and at HP8.

Current dates are on muenchner-stadtbibliothek.de.

Kulturhaus Milbertshofen

There is a lot going on at Kulturhaus Milbertshofen: language cafés on Thursdays, chess on Wednesdays and an open games night on Fridays, about every two weeks. They have more than 300 games. Everything is free.

Check the games night dates on in-muenchen.de before you go. With a board game, you have something to do and to talk about right away.

Evenings and spontaneous plans

Not everyone wants to commit to a whole semester straight away. There are good options for spontaneous evenings too.

Pub quiz at the Shamrock

The Shamrock runs a pub quiz every Thursday, in German and English. The website says nothing about costs. Details on shamrockmunich.de.

You can go alone and ask if a team needs one more person. When you guess answers together, the conversation almost starts by itself: who knows the answer, who is just guessing? And because the quiz runs every week, you can keep playing with the same team.

Spontaneous meetups in small groups

From 2027, Spontaction starts in Munich: spontaneous meetups in small groups near you, always in a public place like a café, bar or bouldering gym, never in someone's home. See how the app will work. You can see what we are planning in Munich on our events section.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the easiest place to meet new people in Munich?

In groups that meet regularly. A Stammtisch (a regular meetup at a pub), a language café or a volunteer shift gives you fixed dates with the same people. If you keep going, a room full of strangers turns into a familiar one.

How do I make friends when I am new to Munich?

Start with a group for newcomers, for example the Munich Stammtisch or Social Circle Munich. Our rule of thumb: go four or five times before you decide. According to a study from the University of Kansas (Hall 2018), it takes about 50 hours together to become casual friends, so give it time.

What can I do alone in Munich to meet people?

Formats with a clear task work well alone: a pub quiz, a language café, a games night or a cooking meetup. You do not have to come up with a conversation. The game or the food gives you the topic.

Are there free meetups for young people in Munich?

Yes, several. Free options include the Munich Stammtisch, Munich Girls Talking & Walking, the Mobil Krankenkasse running group, the language cafés at the city library, Kulturhaus Milbertshofen, the LMU Get-Together, and volunteering with the Münchner Tafel or through Tatendrang.

Wrap-up: start this week

Munich is full of people who are just starting over. Three things help you most:

  1. Pick one group. One that fits your everyday life.
  2. Go four or five times. By then, you are no longer a new face.
  3. Start this week. The next date from the table above might be just a few days away.

We start in Munich in 2027 and are building spontaneous meetups in small groups. If you want to be there from the start: Join the waitlist.
